On Page SEO
Elements of On Page SEO
On Page SEO is the process of setting up your website, and all of its pages, in a way that search engines will know what your website is about. This process will only be about 30% of the total search engine optimization process but it is the foundation of everything to follow. Without following the standards that are required, everything else you do will not be as effective. If it is not done correctly then the search engines will not rank your site very high.
When optimizing these elements, it is important that you have done your research for the keywords that you will want to optimize for. Visit this page learn more about how to do local keyword research.
HTML Optimization and Meta Tags
We will begin with the HTML code, or Meta Tags, that is found in the background of each of your web pages. Your visitors never see this information when viewing your website but search engines look for it first in order to decide what your page is about and how to sort and rank it in their index. So, we want to make sure that they are accurately and precisely targeted to your keywords.
The most important are the Title and Description Tags. I will stress this again, these are the most important tags on your website. Getting these wrong can mean the difference between being found on page 1 or page 100. Below are the Meta Tags and HTML Code that will need to be optimized.
- Title Tag
- Description Tag
- Keywords Tag
- H1 – H6 Tags
- Keywords that are in Bold, Italics and Underlined
- Link Text to the Other Pages on Your Website
- Image Alt Text
Optimized Internal Linking Structure
The internal linking structure is how all of your website pages link together. These are important because they act as votes for the pages that the links go to. It is called Anchor Text. This is called backlinking when working on Off Page SEO.
Internal linking should follow two main rules. First, it should be set up in way that makes it easy for your visitors to navigate to other pages of your website. Having a confusing website will drive potential customers away, so keep it simple.
Second, the link text that you use is very important. Link Text, or Anchor Text, is the clickable text that will take them to the appropriate page. It is important that this link contain a keyword that you want to target for the page it goes to.
Optimized Content and Keyword Density
The content on your website should be informative, interesting and keyword rich. The idea is to use your selected keywords throughout your page. You will want to use them as much as you can without looking spammy. Remember, you are writing to people and not to search engines. But, you do want the search engines to know what your pages are about.
So, a good rule to follow is to keep the keyword density between 3% – 5%. This means that you will need to use your keyword 3-5 times every 100 words. Sometimes this will be hard to achieve without looking un-natural. You will have to read it carefully to make sure it sounds good. It is better to use your keywords less than to have it sound spammy.
Optimizing Pictures and Images
Optimizing the images is often over looked by many people, but it is very important. When search engine spiders come to your site, they read the HTML. For pictures and images, they do not see them as pictures, they will look to the Image Alt Text to tell them what it is a picture of. So, you will want to use a keyword in this. This is also another great way to use your keyword on the page again.
Other reasons for making sure that you use the Image Alt Text, is because of mobile phones and people who are blind or have impaired vision. The mobile phones will show this text as a link instead of showing the actual picture. The vocal software used by many of the vision impaired will read this text out loud, but cannot see the image itself.
